RE: Inverter to outlet wiring

More than anything, this was just a discussion. Friend of mine has a 3000 watt inverter he doesnt need, and was willing to give it to me. When I asked about the install, he described as I did earlier, and that was what led me to ask some questions here. I have a 4 pack of 6v batteries, and really don't need the inverter right now, but more just wanted to do some info searching.

Inverter to outlet wiring

Quick question....
This doesn't sound right to me, but a buddy said I am able to wire up a large (3000watt) inverter directly from batteries and tie it in to an outlet nearby, thereby backfeeding from battery power to inverter to outlets. Sounds too easy and just doesn't sound right to me.
All I have been reading is that you need to create a sub panel, get a transfer switch (for an inverter that big) etc etc....
Just looking for your thoughts.
Thanks

RE: GFI issue

Problem solved. Narrowed down the outlet that was causing the issue. It was the outside outlets by the propane storage tanks. Took the outlet off and found one of the white wires had been bent too far back (one too many times) and it broke before contacting the outlet.
Removed that outlet, cut and stripped the white wire that was causing the issue and reinstalled a new outlet (just to be safe). Now everything works as intended including the GFI.
Thanks everyone for the assistance!
This is a great reference place.

RE: GFI issue

Alright. Well, I will do a little more tinkering tomorrow and see what plays out. After that..... better call someone who does it for a living.
Thanks again everyone!

RE: GFI issue

Okay, so if I understand you correctly, I need to find one hot Black and one hot White. Those are the line wires. The other set of white and black will be the load wires. Correct?
Thanks again for the assistance!!

RE: GFI issue

This may sound too basic, but how do I determine line vs load? I assume that I disconnect the GFI, assure I have 110v power, and test the (white or black) wires to find a line in. The other of the same color would be the load?

RE: GFI issue

Okay that was wierd.......... Ran the generator to test the GFI that is hooked up as of now. Hit the reset button, and it killed the generator. Whats up with that?
Thinking I may need a electrician to come take a look at things.

RE: GFI issue

One more thing.....
The GFI I replaced was a 20Amp, but it is on a 15Amp breaker. Is this correct?
Thanks again

RE: GFI issue

Okay..........went to the trailer, and the wiring is correct to the GFI plug. I have 2 whites and 2 blacks and 1 copper ground. All in the right place.
All other interior outlets are working except the 3 on the GFI (Bathroom, kitchen, kitchen). The breaker for the GFI has been identified and is in the "on" position. There are 2 additional outlets (in the medicine cabinet that the hairdryer plugs into, and outside near batteries) that dont work either. Total of 5 outlets not working.
Looked at the fuse panel where my converter is, and there is nothing labeled outlets or receptacles. They all seem to be for lighting.
Is there anywhere else I am neglecting to locate a fuse or breaker?
Thanks everyone.

RE: GFI issue

I will go out to the trailer shortly and check all the wiring again. There is no issue with connection to shore power as this occured when just running the genny. Ill post back in a bit.

GFI issue

I have been having transient issues with the GFI outlet in my bedroom (near the sink) on my Warrior. The GFI would pop which took out all the outlets near the kitchen as well. The outlets on the opposite side would work although, so I am assuming they are not all hooked together yet I have only found one GFI outlet with the "test" and "reset" buttons on them. All the other outlets are standard ones.
I thought it was the GFI, so I replaced it and now it and the ones in the kitchen don't work (as well as the others on the opposite side of the trailer). It was a 20A, and was replaced with the same.
There is a breaker under my microwave that was tripped, but I reset it and still nothing. I also looked at the fuses where my converter is and there is nothing there that says outlets.
Can someone point me in a direction to try to fix this issue? All help is greatly appreciated!!

RE: 2 questions

Ah yes, forgot to mention that. I recently upgraded from 2 "12 volt" batteries to 4 "6 volt". As of now we are okay, but my main concern, and why I upgraded, is to allow the furnace to run longer without killing the batteries during the night. Essentially I have twice the batteries, and thought I would need twice the converter to charge the batteries now, without having to run the generator as long as I had been. Yes I could go to a 45amp I suppose. I know that the Preogrssive Dynamics 45 or 60 amp charger/converter with charge wizard will be a much more efficient piece of equipment in comparison to the 30amp that came stock with the unit. Price wise is about $20 difference for the 45amp as the 60 amp is $150 online. Will I have to do the same wire upgrades with the 45amp?

RE: 2 questions

Thanks for the info.
Don't have my TH with me right now, so I can't check the guage wiring now. It is a WW LE3305, and I read that the wires should be 8 guage, but not certain. Is the process for upgrading the wiring difficult, in regard to where it needs to be run (to batt's and to breaker panel)?
Reason I am looking into the tank heater (and I live in Arizona BTW), is because I have a late November Elk hunt coming up. Last year I was on the same hunt, temps got to 10 degrees and I had no water. I went under the rig, and tapped the fresh tank and could feel it crunch with ice. I understand the concern of the smaller pipes freezing first, and with that being said, is there a fix to this issue? I had to wait 2 days for temps to increase and allow whatever was frozen to thaw before I could use my taps/shower, and dont want to go that route again if it can be avoided.
Thanks again

2 questions

I have two questions:
First I am going to install a new converter/charger to replace my current 30amp. Going to get a Progressive Dynamics 60 amp with charge wizard (PD9260). I have heard that it is a good idea to replace the incoming and outgoing wiring if I upgrade. Is it necessary or just recommended? Does anyone know of a post/thread that shows a wire install or upgrade for this?
Second I plan on getting a tank heater for my fresh water tank (the kind that sticks to the bottom of the tank). Anyone had good luck with any one brand or info on who has a good selection. So far I have found one through "Ultra Heat" for about $120.
Thanks for all the help!

Weekend Warrior going out of business???????????????????

Friend of mine having some issues with their Rage'N Toyhauler was told by a "higher up" of that company that Weekend Warrior is going out of business. Anyone else heard of this recently? I thought Warrior bought Rage'N...........

RE: 6v Battery setup help

I will be looking into upgrading my converter as well now that I have the 6v's. The 30A IOTA converter that came with my Toyhauler may not keep up with the charging. Maybe a 60A Progressive Dynamics will fit the bill.

RE: 6v Battery setup help

I used my 4 battery 6v setup last weekend and noticed a big difference in reserve capacity. Didn't have to use my heater at all, but still was always in the green (or good) range the entire trip only running the genny occasionally during the evening to assure a full charge. This years ELK hunt in November will be a true test to see their potential. Will post feedback when I get my trophy......

RE: 6v Battery setup help

Well sounds like I did what I was supposed to, and everything works. Hooked up 4 U2200's and seems to be okay. Might try to get some heavier guage cables someday, bit for now all is a go.
Thanks everyone for the useful info!!

6v Battery setup help

I just setup my 6v battery bank in my hauler, and want to make sure that my plans on wiring it are correct. I made a generic pic in MS Paint, but cant get it to load into a message. The process seems to be a hassle for this newbie.
Is there an easier way to load a pic into a message here or can I email someone directly to look over what I have and give me some advise or reassurance?
Thanks A Lot!!
